About Golden Age Project:

The Golden Age Project brand was created in Sweden in 2005 as a side business to Golden Age Music´s distribution of high end pro audio gear. Golden Age Music was founded in 1982 by Bo Medin who from the age of ten devoted close to twenty years of activities into the wonderful world of electronics and audio.

Bo then decided to turn his hobby into a professional venture.

Deeply rooted in the old style analog audio world and enjoying all the amazing products in his business, both from the sales side of things but also as a repair guy and a designer of electronics and loudspeakers, a dream to be able to offer the classic and very musical sound qualities at an affordable price point grew stronger and stronger.

The fulfillment of that dream was the creation of the Golden Age Project brand. Having a humble start with several ribbon mic models, the big breakthrough came in 2006 when the PRE-73 preamp was released, it became an instant success and it is still selling very well in its present MKIII version.

New products have been constantly added to the range that now consists of a good number of mics and outboard units. Two of the most recent ones is the COMP-3A, a clone of the revered LA-3A that has received rave reviews, and the first tube based GAP product, the COMP-2A, based on the LA-2A, that was released in early 2017.

Golden Age Project PRE-73 MKIII Mic Preamp

The MKIII has the following new features compared to the MKII:
  • Tantalum capacitors in the signal path.
  • Selectable two position high frequency AIR boost eq, 3 or 6 dB @ 30 kHz. 
  • Selectable two frequency high pass filter, 6 dB/octave at 40 or 170Hz. 
  • The pcb is prepared for the Carnhill input transformer.
  • Revised and less complicated GAIN switch with a separate switch for MIC/LINE selection. 
  • All GAIN settings can also be used in LINE mode

The PRE-73 MKIII is a one-channel vintage style microphone-, lineand instrument preamplifier. The signal path uses only discrete components like resistors, capacitors and transistors. The inand output is transformer balanced, using two different transformers, each one optimized for its purpose. This is the way audio components were built before integrated circuits became available. 
The circuit used in the PRE-73 MKIII is similar to the preamp section in the classical 1073 module with a corresponding sound character that is warm, punchy, sweet and musical. These classic characteristics have been heard on countless recordings through the years and it is a versatile sound that works very well on most sound sources and in most genres. ?The essence of this sound is now available at a surprisingly low cost, making it available to nearly everyone.

The class-A circuit used in the COMP-54 is similar to the one in the classic 2254 compressor that was designed in 1969. It quickly became a legend due to it´s totally unique sound character that is warm, smooth, sweet and musical. These characteristics have been heard on countless recordings through the years and it is a versatile sound that works very well on most sound sources and in most genres. The essence of this sound is now available at a surprisingly low cost, making it available to nearly everyone.
 
The COMP-54 uses a diode bridge as the gain control element, a method that is revered for its smooth way of operation. Some of the most sought after vintage compressor designs, like the 2254, 2264, 33609, Siemens™ and EMI™ used the same basic design.
 
The controls in the COMP-54 are very flexible covering broad ranges of Ratio, Attack and Release times, including two Auto positions. All controls except the Gain make-up one are stepped for easy resetting and stereo matching.
There are three selectable sidechain high pass filter frequencies available to handle special situations. 
 
The Bypass switch is a true bypass where a relay switches the complete circuitry in or out. The IN/OUT switch makes it possible to switch the compression on and off while retaining the coloring from the transformers and the electronic circuitry. 
The meter can show output level or gain reduction. It is also possible to link two units for stereo operation.

Golden Age Project D2 Large Dynamic Microphone

Golden Age Project D2 Large Dynamic Microphone. The D2 is a high quality dynamic microphone with a full bodied sound and an excellent transient response.

The D2 is a high quality dynamic microphone with a full bodied sound and an excellent transient response. It has a consistent cardioid polar patt ern for a low off -axis coloration and a good rejection of unwanted sounds.
 
The D2 has a marked presence peak centered around 5 kHz for a forward and distinctive sound. Using the D2 close to the sound source results in a bass boost in the 75-300 Hz area due to the proximityeffect which can help make voices and instruments sound fuller.
 
The three switches allows the user to adjust the frequency response. There are two switches for selecting two diff erent bass rolloff fi lters and one switch for lowering the response in a frequency range centered around 5 kHz.
 
Equipped with an internal windscreen, an external pop fi lter will usually not be needed. The 5/8’ thread adator in the stand adaptor matches diff erent stand gauges.
 
The D2 is a versatile microphone that will perform very well in many applications, in the studio, on stage and in broadcast applications, for speech/vocals and instruments like kick-drum and electric bass.

Using the D2:
The D2 can be used with any standard mixer or preamp. Use either a XLR to XLR or XLR to 1/4” plug low impedance cable. Do not use the D2 with 48V phantom power engaged.
When mounting the D2 to the stand you may need to remove the threaded adapter from the mic holder, depending on the threading of the mic stand.
The D2 should point towards the sound source.
 
Be aware of the proximity effect (an increase in bass response) when the mic is close to the sound source). This can be a good or a
bad thing. You can adjust the bass response by changing the distance from the mic to the sound source for an optimum result in different applications.
 
You can also use the bass rolloff filters to lower or remove the bass boost:
The switch to the left enga- ges a bass roll off filter that is about 3 dB down at 120 Hz and 5 dB at 50 Hz.
The switch in the middle engages a bass roll off filter that is about 3 dB down at 210 Hz and 10 dB at 100 Hz.
The switch to the right enga- ges a filter that lowers a range centered around 5 kHz with a maximum of about 4 dB. This filter is active in about the same frequency range as the presence peak and therefore lowers it when it is engaged.

The PRE-73 DLX has a number of improvement and new features compared to the PRE-73 MKII:
Tantalum capacitors in the signal path. 
Selectable 1073-style high pass filter, 50Hz, 80Hz, 160Hz and 300Hz.
Output Attenuator -7, -14, -21 and -28 dB (located after the output transformer) allows overdriving the output stage and the output transformer for added character by lowering the output signal to a suitable level.
The circuit board is prepared for Carnhill Mic and Line transformer and high pass inductor.
The Insert jack can be switched in/out from the front panel. An internal jumper can select that the Insert jack always has an output signal.
Switchable 600 ohm Output Termination and Ground Lift on the back panel.
Selectable Active or Passive DI input and selectable input impedance in active mode, Hi Z or 100 kohm, by internal jumpers.
The DI can signal can be selected to pass or bypass the mic input transformer by internal jumpers.
Relays are used to control internal switching for DI input, Phantom power, Mic Low Z, Insert and Phase for shorter circuit board signal paths. The relays are controlled by front panel switches.

Additional frequencies have been added and the mid frequency band uses two inductors, the higher value of the second one is used for the two lowest frequencies, 160 Hz and 240 Hz, to achieve a suitable response.

The EQ-73 has stepped frequency controls that offers a wide selection of frequencies from 20 Hz to 24 kHz.

The control range is +/-15 dB for the two lower bands and +/- 18dB for the high frequency band.
There are separate bypass switches for all three bands.
 
The EQ-73 is made to be used together with one of our PRE-73 models that has an Insert jack. It can also be used with many other units that has a low level insert jack.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The signal first enters an input transformer - one for the mic input and another one for the line input. The primary of the mic input transformer has two windings that are either connected in series or in parallell which results in an input impedance of either 
1200 or 300 Ohms. The transformers are followed by two input gain stages. For gains up to 50 dB, only one of them is being used. For gains above 50 dB, the second gain stage is inserted in the signal path. Both gain stages uses only three transistors each. After the gain stages, the signal goes to the equalizer section and then to the output level potentiometer and from there to the output stage. This stage again only uses three transistors, the last one in the chain is a hefty 2N3055 power transistor run in class-A mode, driving the output transformer. All in all, the complete signal chain contains only a maximum of 12 active elements including the three transistors in the eq section. 
Compare that to the big number of transistors that are usually used in one single integrated circuit! 
 
MODERN VERSUS OLD
It is true that there are some great IC´s available today that achieves very low levels of static and dynamic distortion. The simple circuits that the PREQ-73 uses, and even more so the transformers, cannot match the low distortion specifications of modern 
IC´s. It is the distortion components that imparts a sound character to the audio signal and, if the distortion components are of the right sort, this is a good thing since it makes the recorded voice or instrument sound “better”, more musical, more pleasing to the ear. This is one reason why vintage style units are so popular today. Modern, transparent sounding audio circuits is surely not a bad thing, sometimes they are prefered over colored ones. It´s all about taste and it depends on the genre. For most modern music styles, color and character is usually a good thing.

The EQ-81 has stepped frequency controls that offers a wide selection of frequencies from 33 Hz to 15 kHz. The BASS and TREBLE frequency bands are switchable between shelving and bell and the MID frequency bands is of the bell type with a switchable Hi Q setting. The control range is +/- 18dB. All four bands can be set in an off mode. The EQ-81 is not intended to be used as a standalone EQ. It is designed to be used together with one of the Golden Age Project models that has an insert jack. It can also be used with some other product that has a low level (about -18 dBu to -10 dBu) unbalanced insert connector. Combining one of our PRE-73 units and an EQ-81 and using a UNITE rack kit to mount them together, one will get a 19-inch 1081-style unit at a low cost and with a great sound!

The main signal path in the EQ-81 consists of four gain stages, one for each each frequency band. Each gain stage uses five transitors and a few resistors and capacitors. So, the complete signal chain contains a small number of active elements. Compare that to the big number of transistors that are usually used in one single integrated circuit! The filter circuits uses additional passive components. The mid bands uses inductors and capacitors for a classic LCstyle eq circuit. By designing the EQ-81 to be used with a unit with a low level insert jack, the unit did not have to be fitted with an input and output stage, reducing the cost of the unit.
 
MODERN VERSUS OLD

The Golden Age Project PRE73 Jr is the little brother to our big seller, the PRE73. It uses the same discrete (no IC's) signal path with a transformer balanced in and output. In order to be able to offer this classic and musical sound character at an even more affordable price point, we did scale down on some features that is seldom used. All the things needed for making great sounding recordings are there and the smaller format makes it possible to mount four units in our 19 inch rack kit, the UNITE MKII.

Golden Age Project Pre573MK2

An updated version of its amazingly popular sibling, the Golden Age PRE573MKII is here to impress with updated features and more power than ever.

The PRE-573 has a dedicated insert connector at the back allowing it to interface with other GAP 500 modules. The insert can be activated by removing a jumper connector at the back of the module.

There is a second jumper at the back of the module that selects 600 ohm termination on the output. The standard mode is termination on, since it gives the flattest response when the PRE-573 is used with modern line inputs that typically has an input impedance of 10 kohm or more. The user can chose to remove the jumper and deactivate the termination resistor, this will increase the level above 10 kHz and create a peak in the response for an even more pronounced  "Air" effect.

The output is transformer balanced and fully floating and can drive a 600 ohm load up to level of about 28 dBu.

  • The PRE-573 is a one width module that has the sound and the features that made the PRE-73 so successful and a few additional ones.
  • Circuit uses the preamp and output section from the classic 1073-module, adapted to work in the api rack format. 
  • Total gain range from -15 to +80 dB. The 10 - 70 dB range is handled by a turn switch and there is a separate toggle switch to select an additional 5 or 10 dB gain.
  • Input can be configured to accept line level signals by another switch, the gain is then lowered by about 25 dB and the input impedance increased to about 15k ohm.
  • input impedance of the mic input mode can be switched between 1200 and 300 ohm.
  • Phantom power and phase reverse is also selectable by front panel switches.
  • New Feature: active DI-input with a high input impedance of about 1.5 M ohm
  • The output signal from the active DI circuit passes through the input transformer for some extra character. 
  • The DI-input is extremely flexible since it can be changed to a purely passive one via a front panel switch- The DI input is then exactly the same as in the PRE-73 Mk2 where the signal is feed directly into the second gain stage, bypassing the transformer and with an input impedance of about 100 kohm. 
  • New feature: switchable AIR mode that  adds a small boost above 10 kHz that peaks at 2 dB at about 35 kHz.
  • Simple but effective signal and overload indicator is offered by a single LED that starts glowing red at about +4 dBu and then increases its intensity up to the maximum output level.
